Foundation-wide Cycles of Inquiry
An additional set of tools was designed for use by a larger core leadership team that is charged with leading a Foundation-wide Cycle of Inquiry to engage a broader set of foundation stakeholders in building a foundation-wide consensus for change. An important input for this process is the Data Collection Resource Guide the core leadership team can use to gather an analysis of diversity and equity data about the foundation and the community. Also included in this section are tools the team can use to facilitate dialogue to clarify definitions for equity concepts and change strategies that best fit the foundation's mission and objectives. Finally, a number of tools are included to help the leadership determine the best strategy to move from dialogue and assessment to planning to strengthen particular aspects of the foundation.
Culminating the first foundation-wide Cycle of Inquiry, this shift to planning and short-term action can occur in as little as year, but may take longer depending on time and resources invested. At that time your leadership team will need to consider what the best strategy for deepening and sustaining the changes launched in this first phase of strategic alignment. For example, one of the LBE foundations has recently completed a work-plan to launch a second cycle of foundation-wide work to integrate their LBE values and principles into the operational culture of the foundation. A copy of this work-plan is included in the next section of this toolkit.
