Foundations Take The Lead: Promising Approaches to Building
Inclusive and Equitable Communities
A message from Cindy Sesler Ballard, Executive Director,
CFLeads: Equity and inclusion are bedrock American
values; they form the core of what makes America the “land
of opportunity.” CFLeads is pleased to bring you
this new publication that tells the stories of seven community
foundations that are safeguarding those values while strengthening
the fabric of their communities. Their concern extends
to new immigrants as well as historically marginalized
groups. Each story underscores the importance of data in
making progress on issues that are emotion-laden and poorly
understood. It is our hope that these stories suggest new
avenues of inquiry, bring new tools to your attention,
alert you to colleagues you can call upon, and inspire
you to action. CFLeads is grateful to the Ford Foundation
for underwriting this publication |

and Community Change.
Based on a series of meetings organized by the Coalition
of Community Foundations for Youth with a group of senior,
community foundation leaders, this publication discusses
the ways in which community foundations' unique access, agility,
credibility, and local knowledge places them in a pivotal
position at the center of community life and describes how
community foundations throughout the US are using their position
to develop and expand their leadership roles.
